The Friendly Spectator?
If your wisdom was a tree, the soil would be all your experiences good and bad. The root, however, is a strong daily decision. And the biblical seed? Read it below:
“In all your acquiring, acquire understanding (Proverbs 4:7).”
Now imagine a plan to ruin that routine and all the growth potential! Then put a smile and a head nod on this obstacle. Smaller than a king, queen, or even a rookie, is a “checker” able to put your whole garden of wisdom in “checkmate.” Beware of The Friendly Spectator.
See most obstacles to your spiritual success stand boldly and clearly in your way! But how many people size up a smiling mannequin with a receptive head nod. They’re there for “…there there…” when you reveal all your personal problems. But they offer nothing else:
- no scripture
- no empathy
- no sidekick reflex
- no helpful experience offered (or even Googled)
So this Friendly Spectator strengthens the artificial power of the dilemma over their so-called friend!
But what’s real problem with this? I’ll tell you as soon as you answer this: How are you getting any understanding? How exactly are you lacing your pain with your new wisdom preventing a next time? Where’s your root? How can your tree stand?
Every time you bow to vanity eager to confide in a Friendly Spectator, you become more addicted to “a hope deferred (Proverbs 13:12). Late rapper Tupac Shakur termed this experience “falling in love with the struggle.” It isolates your problems away from strategy, let alone your Christian rights. This method is too lukewarm to be effective!
Here’s good news. Jumping over a Friendly Spectator is easy since these “checkers” literally just sit there. Simply stop sharing your deepest dilemmas with them, keeping everything in the “rhetoric zone” with phrases like “can’t complain… same 'ol same 'ol… how about you?” You can absolutely be friendly without your daily bio. Talk about victory in general. Only wisdom gets to hear you intimately because its fruits always taste like change.
After you jump, you may get some “conversation coupons.” Surely their former ear may seem provocative. But don’t relapse! Instead extend your ear out to God.
Between true friends, this is a blessing. As iron sharpens iron, man sharpens man. Remember? God bless!
